ROSEWOOD

She lugged the shotgun through the thorny thickets of the forest. She cursed and bitched quietly to herself the whole way. She made comments about her expensive pants and how they would be ruined. All the while, I lay next to death.

Then she heard the flock cawing. She hid behind a tree as they were headed her way. Two broke from the flock and circled above her. They landed in a tree not far away. She peeked around the tree before sliding the shotgun upward beside it. She aimed carefully before she fired. She screamed as the twelve-gauge blew her backwards. She landed on her ass.

As the cloud of smoke cleared, she looked to where the ravens were and found they were gone. She searched under the tree where she had fired. Nothing.

“Goddamn it,” she whispered.

Then, her bitching recommenced. She went on about how hot she was and how bad she was sweating. She whispered, “I probably stink.”

The two ravens circled above her before landing in a tree not far from her again. They looked at her and cawed at her, as if taunting.

“Little bastards,” she whispered before firing again. She braced her body better this time. She waited for the cloud of smoke to clear. She had missed again.

At that point she figured it was hopeless. She hung her head before she set the gun on the ground. She thought of my condition before she began to cry. While she wiped the tears from her eyes, she heard a strange bark. She looked to find a large red fox staring at her from the clearing. The fox barked at her again before turning to trot into the forest. He looked back at her, as if motioning for her to follow.

“That must be Cornelius,” she whispered. “Sean’s old friend.”

She picked herself up and began to follow him. The fox was kind to not get too far ahead. They came upon a beautiful pond that had a wooden bridge for crossing. The fox trotted across it. Soon after crossing, the fox went to the spot were two dead ravens lay. Cornelius had watched the fight this morning. He rolled on the dead ravens before looking back to the girl. He stared deep into her eyes before he rushed off into the thicket, disappearing in the forest.

She knelt down by the two dead ravens. She was shocked.

“How did he know of Sean’s condition?” she whispered to herself.

She was in disbelief. Her heart skipped several beats before she picked up the two dead ravens and ran for the cabin. She hated to carry them. Flea-ridden birds, was what she thought of them.

She barged through the front door and ran up the steps. She was out of breath as she screamed to wake me. My eyes were closed, and my breathing was shallow.

“Sweetheart,” I said in a faint whisper.

“You’re alive!”

I replied, “Barely. Quick, the raven’s heart.”

She said, “The heart is still in the bird’s chest.”

I told her, “I can’t cut them out. I’m too weak.
